Until 1851 the main historical square in Grudziądz featured a city hall. Today its focal point is the memorial to the Polish soldier. The square is surrounded by Baroque-styled buildings that come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and layouts. The oldest one, Pod Łabędziem (Under the Swan), which dates back to the Renaissance period, is formed from two narrow buildings. On the last weekend of May, the square is covered with natural grass for a special event called Majówka na trawie (The May Picnic on the Grass), the eco-picnic that promotes a healthy lifestyle and food. On the first weekend of December, the Market Square hosts the St. Nicholas Fair, which is usually set in winter scenery.
